Rhodes Rams win Senate Baseball Championship
by Anthony Gray
(Plain Press, July 2010) The Rhodes High School Rams bested the Lincoln West Wolverines 10 – 7 in the Cleveland Senate Championship Game held on June 3rd at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland.
Over two thousand fans in attendance were treated to an exciting game. The outcome of match-up between the West Side rivals was in doubt right up to the end when with Rhodes leading 10 -7, Lincoln West’s Junior outfielder Brian Ruiz, the League’s Most Valuable Player, hit a ball 400 feet into center field with the bases loaded. While most everyone in the stadium thought it was gone, Rhodes Junior Justin Sangster raced back and caught it to end the game. Sangster also had three hits in helping lead the Rams to victory.
The winning pitcher was Matt Mazur of Rhodes High School, who also hit a 350-foot home run earlier in the game.
