CAMPS

AMABSSADOR IN SPORTS SOCCER CAMP Scranton Road Bible Church will host the 8th annual Ambassador in Sport Soccer Camp July 20 to 24th. All activity will take place between the church and Luis Munoz Middle School field. Hours of the camp are from 10 am until 3pm. The week will conclude on Saturday the 24th with World Cup competition, special awards and a family cookout. The cost of the camp is $20 per camper or $30 per family. It includes a soccer ball, t-shirt and a special lunch on Friday. All children between the ages of 6 and 14 are welcome. CAMP FOR KIDS BAOBAB BLAST: The Near West Side Partnership presents Camp for Kids 2010 Baobab Blast for children ages 5-12 at First Hispanic United Methodist Church, 1965 W. 44th Street, Monday, July 12 – Friday, July 16, 10am – 12 noon - then enjoy lunch together. Registration forms available at Brookside Hunger Center, First Hispanic Church, Nehemiah Mission, Simpson United Methodist Church or Register by calling Pauline at 216-459-1450 (between 9-2pm) at Brooklyn Memorial United Methodist Church. BLUE STREAK SUMMER CAMPS offers a full day camp for children with Down syndrome on the Ursuline Campus during the week of August 2 -6, 2010. Cost is $200. Call Tim at 440-287-7644 for more information.

CLEVELAND METROPARKS SUMMER CAMPS for kids in Kindergarten thru 9th Grade. Focus on nature, art, recreation and more. For camp details including fees and times visit clevelandmetroparks.com.

CONFERENCE

GIRLS KICK BUTT!: Girls ages 12 -18 are invited to a free empowerment conference at the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center Conference Room 526 Superior Ave, Suite 1400. Conference participants will engage in self-esteem building activities like art, games, discussions and role plays. Girls Kick Butt provides a forum for girls to express their views, ask questions, and learn skills, attitudes and behaviors that promote safety and empowerment. Registration begins Monday July 12th. To register call 216-619-6194 x 141 and leave a message with each girl’s name, age, parent/guardian and phone number. Registration is limited. Call early.

FOOD

FREE LUNCHES: Through August 20th City of Cleveland Recreation Centers and staffed playgrounds will offer free lunches from 11:30 – 1 p.m for youths ages 1-18.

LIBRARIES

SUMMER READING CLUB: All readers birth through high school are invited to join the Cleveland Public Library’s Summer Reading Club now through August 7th. Join at any Cleveland Public Library branch or online at http://readingclub.cpl.org. You can read any book you want, enter your titles online or bring a list to the library. When you read six book, you win a Wendy’s coupon and a water bottle (or a sippy cup for preschoolers). When you read 12 books you will receive a tote bag and a certificate for finishing the program.

PLAYGROUNDS

CLEVELAND OUTDOOR PLAYGROUNDS will be staffed Monday – Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. through August 13th. Local staffed playgrounds include: Archmere, W. 41st & Archmere; Fairview Park, W. 38th & Franklin; Halloran, 3550 W. 117th; Herman, W. 60th & Herman; Jefferson, W. 132nd & Lorain; Mercedes Cotner, W. 95th (south of Denison); Michael J. Zone, 6301 Lorain Ave; and Trent, W. 40th & Trent (South of Clark.) When temperatures rise above 80• F spray basis are turned on from M-F 11 – 6 and Saturdays & Sundays Noon – 7 p.m. at Fairview Park, Herman Park, Mercedes Cotner Playground, Trent Playground and Roberto Clemente baseball field at W. 38th and Seymour.

OUTDOOR POOLS

CITY OF CLEVLAND OUTDOOR POOLS are open Wednesday thru Sunday from Noon- 7:30 p.m. Area locations include: Greenwood, W. 38th, (South of Lorain); Halloran, 3550 W. 117th; Lake, W. 85th (North of Detroit); Lincoln, W. 14th and Starkweather; Meyer, W. 30th and Meyer; and Sunrise, W. 95th (South of Denison).

RECREATION CENTERS

Cleveland Recreation Centers are open Monday thru Friday from Noon – 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Clark Recreation Center, 5706 Clark Ave, 664-4657; Cudell, 1910 West Blvd. 664-4137; Cudell Fine Arts, 10013 Detroit Ave, 664-4183; Estabrook, 4145 Fulton Rd., 664-4139, Zone, 6301 Lorain Ave, 664-3373. The recreation centers offer many youth summer programs such as Free Lunch, Swimming lessons, baseball and T-Ball leagues, and arts and crafts. Call or visit the individual centers for more information.
